Quora, the popular question-and-answer website, has recently launched a new platform called Poe, which allows users to interact with various AI chatbots from different providers. Poe aims to be a hub for exploring and experimenting with new AI technologies, as well as a source of content for Quora’s main Q&A site.
However, what makes Poe stand out from other chatbot platforms is its innovative creator monetization program, which rewards bot creators for their efforts and contributions. Quora announced the launch of this program on October 25, 2023, making it one of the first of its kind in the AI chatbot market.
How does the creator monetization program work?
According to Quora’s developer documentation1, bot creators on Poe have two ways to generate income from their bots. The first method involves sharing a portion of the revenue with the bot’s creator when a user subscribes to Poe through the bot. This immediate revenue sharing model encourages creators to develop engaging and effective bots that can attract and retain users on the platform.
The second method, which is expected to be available soon, allows bot creators to set a per-message fee for their bots, which Quora will pay for every message sent by a user. This option gives more flexibility and control to the creators, who can set their own prices based on the quality and value of their bots.
How much can bot creators earn?
Quora says that bot creators can earn up to $20 per user who subscribes to Poe thanks to their bots. There are several scenarios that are considered for this metric, such as:
- Bringing a user to Poe for the first time and they eventually subscribe
- Bringing a user back to Poe who eventually subscribes
- Showing a bot’s paywall just before the user subscribes
- Receiving messages from users at a price set by the creator (coming soon)
Whenever a user subscribes to Poe, Quora sets aside $10 per monthly subscription or $20 per annual subscription. This amount is then split among any monetizing creators with successfully converting activations and successfully converting paywalls for that subscription.
Currently, the creator monetization program is only open to users in the US, but Quora plans to expand it to other regions in the future.
What are some examples of bots on Poe?
Poe offers a wide range of bots for users to chat with, from general conversational agents to specialized ones that can generate content such as poems, stories, code, essays, songs, celebrity parodies, and more. Some of the bots are powered by well-known AI providers such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT2 and Anthropic3, while others are created by independent developers using Poe’s own tools and APIs.
Some of the popular bots on Poe include:
- Bing: A bot that can answer any web search query using Bing’s search engine
- GPT-3: A bot that can generate text on any topic using OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model
- Anthropic: A bot that can generate text on any topic using Anthropic’s AI system
- Poet: A bot that can write poems on any theme or style
- Storyteller: A bot that can write stories on any genre or prompt
- Coder: A bot that can write code in various programming languages
- Essayist: A bot that can write essays on any subject or question

- Parodist: A bot that can write parodies of famous celebrities or characters
Why is this program important?
Quora’s creator monetization program is an important step forward for the AI chatbot industry, as it recognizes and rewards the efforts and contributions of those who are building and improving these technologies. By offering a fair and transparent revenue-sharing model, Quora hopes to attract more talented and creative developers to its platform, as well as foster a healthy and diverse community of AI enthusiasts.
Moreover, by incentivizing quality and value over quantity and spam, Quora aims to ensure that the content generated by Poe’s bots meets a high enough standard to be distributed across Quora’s main Q&A site, where it can reach millions of users and provide useful information and insights.
Quora’s CEO Adam D’Angelo expressed his excitement about the launch of the program in a tweet4, saying: “This is a major step forward for the platform and is the first program of its kind, so we are very excited to see what it lets everyone create.”
