Amazon has secured a significant talent acquisition from Adept, a startup known for developing AI-powered agents to perform various software-based tasks. Geekwire’s Taylor Soper first reported the news, highlighting that Adept’s co-founders and several team members will be joining the ecommerce giant. This development includes Adept’s co-founder and CEO, David Luan, as well as co-founders Augustus Odena, Maxwell Nye, Erich Elsen, and Kelsey Szot.
Despite the talent shift, Adept will continue its operations under new leadership. Zach Brock, previously head of engineering, is stepping in as the new CEO. Adept will refocus its efforts on creating solutions for "agentic AI," maintaining its commitment to developing general intelligence and an enterprise agent product. The company emphasized that its products would still be powered by their in-house AI models, agentic data, web interaction software, and custom infrastructure. This pivot aims to concentrate more on realizing their agent vision rather than extensive fundraising for foundational models.
This deal with Amazon provides a crucial lifeline for Adept, which has been in acquisition talks with Meta and Microsoft in recent months. Microsoft, notably, had previously invested in the startup. By joining Amazon, Adept’s co-founders and team members bring valuable expertise to enhance Amazon’s generative AI ambitions.
According to a memo from Rohit Prasad, the former Alexa head now leading Amazon's AGI team, Luan and his team’s proficiency in training state-of-the-art multimodal foundational models and creating real-world digital agents aligns with Amazon’s vision. This acquisition will accelerate Amazon's roadmap for building digital agents capable of automating software workflows, a move aimed at delighting both consumer and enterprise customers with practical AI solutions.
The market for AI agents has grown increasingly competitive since Adept's inception, with well-funded startups like Orby and Emergence entering the fray. Market research firm Grand View Research estimates that the AI agents segment was worth $4.2 billion in 2022, indicating a lucrative potential for companies in this space.
Adept, which raised over $415 million in capital and reached a valuation of around $1 billion, has faced significant challenges. The startup lost two of its co-founders, Ashish Vaswani and Niki Parmar, early on and has struggled to bring a product to market despite extensive testing. However, with the new leadership and strategic refocus, Adept aims to overcome these hurdles and make significant strides in the AI industry.
