Google has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence tool that can help journalists verify and fact-check online sources, reducing misinformation and fake news. The tool, called Genesis, uses AI technology to absorb information such as details of current events and then create news stories.
Genesis is designed to act as a personal assistant to journalists, helping them with tasks such as finding relevant sources, summarizing key points, and generating headlines. Genesis can also cross-check the information from different sources and flag any inconsistencies or errors.
Google said that Genesis is not intended to replace journalists or their essential role in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles. Rather, the goal is to give journalists the choice of using these emerging technologies in a way that enhances their work and productivity.
Genesis is powered by Google’s natural language processing and machine learning capabilities, which enable it to understand complex and nuanced texts and generate coherent and fluent texts. Genesis can also adapt to different styles and tones of writing, depending on the type and genre of the news story.
Google said that it is looking to partner with news outlets on the AI tool’s use in newsrooms, particularly focusing on smaller publishers who may lack the resources or expertise to verify and fact-check online sources. Google said that it is committed to ensuring that the use of Genesis is ethical, transparent, and respectful of privacy.
Genesis is part of Google’s Journalist Studio, a collection of tools to empower journalists to do their work more efficiently, creatively, and securely. Journalist Studio also features other tools such as Pinpoint, which helps journalists sift through large collections of documents; Data Commons, which helps journalists find and visualize data; and Project Shield, which helps journalists protect their websites from cyberattacks.
